Does job experience actually help with Certified Information Systems Security Professional exam questions?

It has been four years since I began to work as a network administrator. My primary duties consist of firewall configuration, patching, and incident ticket management. I intend to take CISSP certification exam in future, but I am curious whether my professional experience corresponds to the exam criteria.

There are certain things that look familiar in the syllabus.Security operations, communication and network security are closely related to my current work. However, other areas, such as security architecture, cryptography, trusted computing, and software development security, are things I have had less opportunity to work with directly.

The sample questions are also different from what I expected. Questions aren’t necessarily asking for a definition or fact. They could ask what needs to be done first, or what person or consideration should go into making a decision before doing anything else. Questions could pertain to issues such as data retention or securing the design of a new system.

This is what I am having difficulties with. In my current position, I mostly just go by existing processes and procedures and do tasks that are assigned to me. I don’t really get into the decision-making process as outlined in the questions.

The questions have helped me notice that the exam is not really eight separate subjects. The CISSP assumes that you will approach security more broadly, considering it from a business and risk standpoint.
